The future is thankful.

As yesterday was Thanksgiving, I decided to do this last post of November on a particular topic: gratitude.

It might not look as if there is any connection between finance and gratitude, but that is not entirely correct. Indeed, after Thanksgiving, follows Black Friday (today), a day when we rush to buy something for ourselves, or our loved ones before Christmas. It is good for businesses, and it is also good for us if we practice gift-giving as a love language. I think that what is really special about thanking others, as well as ourselves, is that we take a moment to enjoy how far we have gone, before keep walking.

In our work, this is essential, especially if we struggle to find work-life balance because we feel the pressure to achieve standards that become higher and higher. Taking a break from work, whether that is a small one or even a long break, and regardless of the motive, which can be family or health issues, but it can be simply the curiosity of doing something different like traveling, is essential if we really want to be productive.

Because productivity is an extremely difficult concept to measure, it is important to define our own way of being productive, which should be directly linked to the way we measure success. For example, for someone being successful might mean being able to travel and explore, so for this person being productive would be working towards achieving such goal, with the means they have and given their personality type. Some people might work towards their objective in a way that society might judge very heterodox, they can be perceived as lazy, but if in their own ways they are working towards achieving their definition of success, they are being productive. When someone is doing that, they can only be proud of themselves, and thankful for what there has been so far. The secret to success is really enjoying every single moment of it, living every moment as a victory first and a place to improve for later.

For me, what I am most thankful for this November, is the fact that I am being able to speak my mind about topics that I care about, especially inclusion. Moreover, I am grateful for being able to talk about inclusion also in person, at events such as this blog and through events abroad, such as the "Future of Healthcare Conference" organized in India by the Hertie School last month.
